Kolpa Landscape Park

The soothing burbling of the Kolpa

The Kolpa Landscape Park is located in the far south of Slovenia. Its most important feature is the clean, warm, and biodiverse Kolpa River. Along with the floodplains and steep hills that stretch from the banks of this border river between Slovenia and Croatia, there are also birch stands with bracken undergrowth, a typical Bela Krajina feature of rich fauna and flora with more than 70 distinctive natural features and 16 natural monuments. Large carnivores, such as bears, wolves, and lynx, inhabit this area. Along with 42 cultural monuments and rich architectural heritage (old castles, churches, chapels and workshops), there are ruins of 16 mills and sawmills along the river. Within the park, there is also the only Slovenian strict nature reserve called Hrastova Loza, a nesting place of the largest colony of grey herons.
